It’s not easy stepping into Laurie Geeson’s shoes. For one thing her feet are bigger than mine. For an-other, her shoes are so worn out after 4 ½ years of maximum effort being president there’s not much left of them. She’s barely keeping them on with duct tape and gorilla glue. I can’t thank her enough for all she accomplished, which she couldn’t have done without her right arm. We call him Paul Geeson.

And I would be lost without my friend and mentor, Bob Connors. His wide frame of reference, wisdom, experience and sly humor are always freely given and gratefully accepted. I think he had a lot of darn nerve to retire after only 15 years on the Board.

Becoming your President is a daunting experience. To follow in those footsteps is a responsibility and an honor I take seriously. They brought us so far and gave us such a strong foundation. We are well positioned to keep moving forward. Getting the equipment we needed to move firmly into this electronic era we live in is a big step. And we have some fun projects being planned.

We now have, and are in the process of restoring, a phone booth and pay telephone. That may not sound exciting to you but how long has it been since you’ve seen or used one. Those of us of a certain age remember when there was a phone booth on almost every corner, including the corner of Landers Lane and Reche Rd. next to the old post office. Well, soon there will be one next to the old post office again.

Another project that’s gearing up is “Decades In The Desert.” Often history presents individuals or events on their own time-line, without looking at what else was going on. We’re going to look at the his-tory of the Morongo Basin as a whole a decade at a time, from the 50’s through the 90’s. Because cur-rent events become ancient history really fast. We’ll look at service organizations, housing develop-ments, schools and hospitals being built, stores and businesses opening, governmental agencies com-ing and going, all the ebbs and flows of our Hi-Desert communities.

There might also be good news on the horizon about helping to preserve another important historic site in downtown Yucca Valley soon. Stay tuned.

So welcome to 2017. We hope you come with us on these excursions and help us out every now and then on some of them. We’re going to try to ask for your help only for specific tasks with achievable goals that can be completed in reasonable amounts of time. Your time and energy are important to us. Come see us any Tuesday, Friday or Saturday from 11:00 to 3:00.

My Christmas list for MBHS this year was short. Dear Santa, please bring us a herd of new volunteers, a team of gardeners, a flock of file clerks and data entry wizards, a colony of computer gurus and an electrician.
